=== Respiratory illnesses === Given procalcitonin is a blood marker for bacterial infections, evidence shows that it is a useful tool in guiding the initiation and duration of antibiotics in patients with bacterial pneumonia and other acute respiratory infections. The use of procalcitonin guided antibiotic therapy leads to lower mortality, less antibiotic usage, decreased side effects due to antibiotics and promotes good antibiotic stewardship. The value in these protocols are evident since a high PCT level correlates with increased mortality in critically ill pneumonia patients especially those with a low CURB-65 pneumonia risk factor score. In adults with acute respiratory infections, a 2017 systematic review found that PCT-guided therapy reduced mortality, reduced antibiotic use (2.4 fewer days of antibiotics) and led to decreased adverse drug effects across a variety of clinical settings (ED, ICU, primary care clinic). Procalcitonin-guided treatment limits antibiotic exposure with no increased mortality in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Using procalcitonin to guide protocol in acute asthma exacerbation led to reduction in prescriptions of antibiotics in primary care clinics, emergency departments and during hospital admission. This was apparent without an increase in ventilator days or risk of intubation. Taihō had just launched 42 aircraft as a part of the second raid when Albacore fired the torpedo spread. Of the six torpedoes fired, four veered off-target. Japanese pilot Sakio Komatsu had recently launched and from his aircraft sighted one of the two torpedoes which were heading for Taihō. Komatsu dived into the path of the torpedo which then detonated. The sixth torpedo struck the carrier on her starboard side and ruptured two aviation fuel tanks. The carrier's escorting destroyers made depth charge attacks but caused only minor damage to Albacore. Initially, the damage to Taihō seemed minor; the flooding was quickly contained and the carrier's propulsion and navigation were unaffected. Taihō quickly resumed regular operations, but gasoline vapor from the ruptured fuel tanks began to fill the hangar decks, creating an increasingly dangerous situation on board.

Mescaline has been isolated from numerous cactus species, including Echinopsis (Trichocereus), Gymnocalycium, Lophophora, Opuntia, Stenocereus, and Turbinicarpus species, among others. It occurs at the highest known concentrations in Lophophora williamsii (peyote), where it is highly variable but makes up 0.1 to 0.255% fresh weight and 0.9 to 6.3% of dry weight. Levels of mescaline are much lower in other Lophophora species. The compound also occurs in relatively high concentrations in various Echinopsis species, for instance Echinopsis pachanoi (San Pedro cactus), ranging from 0.02 to 0.12% fresh weight and 0.331 to 2.0% dry weight in this species. Mescaline occurs in only small or trace amounts in most other cactus species in which it has been detected.
Vesugen (T-38) is a tripeptide with the sequence KED or Lys-Glu-Asp. It is one of a number of small peptides developed in Russia in the late 1990s and early 2000s which are purported to have anti-aging effects. Vesugen is claimed to stimulate proliferation and protein synthesis in fibroblast cells in the skin and to improve the appearance of skin, as well as promoting neurotropic effects in brain tissue, giving it a similar pharmacological profile to those claimed for the matrikine peptides produced by Western cosmetic skincare companies.
Around thirty plant species are known to contain caffeine. This caffeine probably is released into the mouth parts of insects, to discourage herbivory. Caffeine in nectar may improve the reproductive success of the pollen producing plants by enhancing the reward memory of pollinators, such as honey bees.
Life-threatening overdose of opium tincture owes to the preparation's morphine content. Morphine produces a dose-dependent depressive effect on the respiratory system, which can lead to profound respiratory depression, hypoxia, coma and finally respiratory arrest and death. If overdose of opium tincture is suspected, rapid professional intervention is required. The primary concern is re-establishing a viable airway and institution of assisted or controlled ventilation if the patient is unable to breathe on their own. Other supportive measures such as the use of vasopressors and oxygen may be indicated to treat cardiac and/or pulmonary failure. Cardiac arrhythmias or arrest will require advanced life-saving measures. Intravenous naloxone or nalmefene, quick-acting opioid antagonists, are the first-line treatment to reverse respiratory depression caused by an overdose of opium tincture. Gastric lavage may be of some use in certain cases.
